Part of building a support system for parents, caregivers, teachers, and those on the Autism Spectrum is facing the dark challenges that persist for individuals who cannot escape the pull of ending their life. We share these resources as a start to the journey of self education around suicide/survivorship and as a resource in a time of crisis. The 988 lifeline is available 24 hours, 7 days a week in all US states.
Neurodiverse Individuals The website 988lifeline.org has a link to help as well as resources for ADHD, Autism, and other neurodivergent-individual supports. We like the links under the Individuals with Neurodivergence https://988lifeline.org/help-yourself/individuals-with-neurodivergence/ section that provide hope and strategies for those seeking support.
Hope Lives: Preventing Teen Suicide This film from PBS Utah focuses on the challenges that occur with adolescence, the teenage brain, and bullying as well as perspectives from survivors and those looking back on pre-suicide-attempt crises. This topic is real, it's scary, and it's important. We want to face it and embrace it as we acknowledge the realities of working through suicide and crisis issues. Watch this film at: https://www.pbsutah.org/pbs-utah-productions/shows/hope-lives-preventing-teen-suicide/ The Mama Dragons and Hope Squad organizations below are discussed in this video.
Mama Dragons We support, educate and empower mothers of LGBTQ children. This group has an impactful website with help for those either starting the journey or in the process of caring for a person in the LGBTQ community. We like their blog posts of Learning I'm not Alone, Why does my child keep changing Their labels, and Finding Hope for the Future. https://www.mamadragons.org/
Hope Squad An in-school, peer-to-peer suicide prevention program in the US and Canada. We find the "Meet the Teams, Hope Squad National Council" to be inspiring as these students serve to share their support for those struggling with suicide and crises. https://hopesquad.com/
Ricochet: An American Trauma Why put a video about gun trauma here? Because more than half of all gun deaths are by suicide. This PBS Newshour Special Report examines the effects on survivors of those who died by suicide (2 different stories in the video) as well as effects on survivors and family members of victims of homicide and mass shootings. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/watch-pbs-newshour-presents-ricochet-an-american-trauma
