Yep, it's been awhile! I'm back in the classroom full-time as a Special Education Teacher at a school between Park City and Salt Lake City. After 5 months teaching this spring (and deciding to return in the fall), it's great to be back in a progressive, school community.
A few highlights from this spring: 1. finding ways to build skills in each student regardless of diagnosis or challenges 2. applying my past years' experience to a K-8 public school and 3. building a group of friends whose focus is on the learning and growth of kids. I'm challenged each day in meeting these students where they're at and finding ways to make learning fun for each child. There's never a dull moment in my classroom (or the library, lunch, playground, or on a hike) as we build healthy relationships with students while also holding boundaries when our kids trip up.
After 17 years teaching at boarding schools (where kids don't go home each day) it's great having interactions with parents dropping off and picking up their kids. It's an opportunity to discuss how school is going and how home issues might affect the day's learning--a nice change from not really getting to know student families. I look forward to prepping my classroom, continuing to build a toolbox of lessons and strategies, and teaching kids on the Autism Spectrum and a mix of other students. Enjoy the rest of your summer and good luck as the fall approaches!
