What are Executive Functioning Skills (EF Skills)? They are the critical tools we use to plan, execute, self-monitor, evaluate, and adjust when completing a task or responsibility. Many students grow these throughout childhood and adolescence, yet there are significant deficits in EF skill growth for those on the Autism spectrum, those with ADD/ADHD, and other neurodiverse abilities.
Our experience in running a school for Autistic students showed the layers of complexities in bringing students up to speed with EF skills as well as adaptations/modifications of assignments and projects for individual students. As a parent, teacher, or caregiver, if you understand EF skills and their importance, you can begin modeling and teaching these skills depending on which skill needs the most attention for your child or family.
