After 18 years in the classroom and 7+ years as Academic Director of a school for Autistic students, it's time. The idea for this website comes from listening to, agonizing over, and problem-solving the myriad challenges associated with empowering high-school aged young men. In other words, the hope for our young men and women comes from the trenches.
Content vs. Process. Both are important. There will be a focus not only on content (what is being done to support the Autism child, what your child did at school) but also on the process (how do we navigate disagreement as a family? How can I, as a parent build my emotional tool-box to encourage my child to do the same?).
Our focus at autismlife.com isn't only the Autism child, it's the support system around him/her/them. It's parents, teachers, siblings, neighbors, researchers, and Autists themselves--we want to build a community based on ground-floor strategies, not ivory-tower pontification. We have first-line experience with these issues impacting families from a practical standpoint. There are plenty of academic-based Autism websites out there--and they are great! Our approach is different.
