Triumph and Tribulation in a Sailing Documentary


This documentary, about Matt Rutherford's journey to be the first to sail around the Americas, shows the circuitous path of being lost as a child in a cult, bouncing in and out of juvenile detention as a teenager, and grappling with school struggles as a kid with ADHD and no sense of direction. His life story and choice to embrace blue water sailing as his passion in life is an example of persevering through repeated setbacks of someone who didn't quite fit in. His childhood included the distractions of drugs and alcohol, anger towards himself, and a residential program in Colorado which helped turn his focus towards adventure and travel. If you've ever wondered how a lost kid could find a sliver of hope and turn it into a life--here's one guy who certainly did.
